Gluten-free food prescribing: your feedback

For the past 40 years, the NHS has provided gluten-free food on prescription to patients diagnosed with coeliac disease.

This started because gluten-free products were not easily available in the shops and were much more expensive compared to non-gluten-free foods.

Together with North Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), we ran a consultation with local people, clinicians and patient groups from 13 February to 17 March 2017 on the prescribing of gluten-free foods. A summary of the feedback we received is available in the engagement report below.

Following the consultation, a decision has been made to stop the prescribing of gluten-free foods to all patients over the age of 18. From 14 August 2017, we will prescribe only a limited choice of products to those patients aged under 18.

This decision has been very difficult for us and we understand the difficulties that people with coeliac disease can face. However, we believe that modern improvements in gluten free options in supermarkets have made it possible to eat a gluten-free diet without foods being specially prescribed by the NHS. The decision will also bring us in line with the NHS across much of the South West.

NHS England is running a national consultation on the prescription of gluten-free foods in the coming months. We will review our policy on the prescribing of gluten-free foods when the outcomes of this consultation are made available.

We will continue to support people with coeliac disease by providing them with appropriate information to follow a gluten-free diet and remain healthy. Any patient with coeliac disease who has concerns or questions about their condition can contact their GP or local pharmacist for more information and advice. You can also read the gluten-free prescibing FAQs and patient information documents below to find out more.
