Cold weather alert: 8 February

Date: 08 Feb 2017

Category: Updates

The Met Office has issued a level 3 cold weather alert for our area over the coming days.

There is a 90% chance of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 1500 on Wednesday 08 Feb and 0900 on Monday 13 Feb in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.

Cold and damp weather – ice, snow and cold winds – can be bad for your health, especially if you're aged 65 or older.

It can make you more more vulnerable to winter illnesses, such as coughs and colds, which could become very serious. It also increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke.

However, there are things you can do to stay well. In particular, seek pharmacist advice at the first sign of illness and keep yourself and your home warm.

You should also keep your bedroom window closed on cold nights as breathing cold air can increase the risk of chest infections.
