Motor neurone disease

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.

MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely that they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order.

Although there is currently no cure for MND, symptoms can be managed to help those affected achieve the best possible quality of life.

Newly diagnosed?

For some, knowing there is a clear cause of their symptoms can come as a relief. For others, the diagnosis is like a thunderbolt.

Whatever reaction you have is completely normal and a whole range of advice, support and information is available. Whatever your circumstances, you need not feel alone; we are here to help.

The MND Association website provides answers to common questions at this time. They have produced a range of publications aimed at people living with MND and their carers, which can be viewed via the website or ordered as paper copies.

For more information visit the Newly Diagnosed section of the Association website or contact MND Connect, the helpline is on 08457 626262 or email mndconnect@mndassociation.org

MND Bristol, Bath, Weston & Winsley Support Group

The MND Bristol, Bath, Weston and Winsley group is run by volunteers and is supported by the MND Association.

They aim to support local people affected by MND.

They provide information, advice and support in a number of ways:

  • Regular meetings and trips to provide people living with MND a chance to meet others and share knowledge
  • An Association Visitor who will stay in regular contact, and provide support and advise on other services available
  • Funding specialist equipment and services to meet the needs of people living with MND
  • They also help to fund research into MND to learn more about the disease and help to find new treatments
